North Korea
The last act of terrorism conclusively linked to North Korea was the midair bombing of Korean Airlines flight 858 in 1987. It currently provides sanctuary for the five remaining "Yodo-go" hijackers of a JAL jet to North Korea in 1970.
It is also widely feared that North Korea has been transferring / selling all types of weapons (including chemical and possibly biological arms) to Islamic fundamentalist terror organizations in the Middle East.
North Korea has also flaunted its missile capabilities. A test-firing in August of 1998 of a two-stage ballistic missile over Japan threatened to plunge the region into a wider conflict.
Geography:
Korea is a 600-mile (966 km) peninsula jutting out from Manchuria and China (and a small portion of the USSR) into the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea off eastern Asia. North Korea occupies an area slightly smaller than Pennsylvania north of the 38th parallel.
The country is almost completely covered by a series of north-south mountain ranges separated by narrow valleys. The Yalu River forms part of the northern border with Manchuria.
